With Burt Lancaster, San Francisco, April 1962

Sometimes a reporter would be sent out to interview some big shot without a moment’s notice. I was probably the only person in the world at that time who didn’t know Mr. Lancaster had been a trapeze artist in a circus for years but he was a gentleman and when I asked him how he kept so fit he simply looked at me as if I came from another planet.

Talking about real gentlemen, two other interviewees come to mind, James Mason and Lloyd Bridges. Lloyd was a big TV star at the time: scuba diving was a newish thing and “Sea Hunt” was helping to popularize it. Lloyd was a hey of a guy, very modest, solid values – no surprise his boys are so successful.
